NYSC Online Registration Fee Reduced to N3,000

The National Youth Service Corps has announced that the online registration fee for prospective corps members has been reduced to N3,000. The online registration was previously charged at N4,000 which caused an outcry from prospective corps members and the general public.

The official twitter handle of the NYSC tweeted this information recently. The Director General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Bamidele Olawumi had earlier promised to reduce the fee following series of protests by stakeholders to reduce or make the online registration totally free.

Last year when the NYSC announced that registration has now moved online it stressed the fact that the new service would make registration easier for prospective corps member and students wouldn’t have to travel to their institutions to get their call-up letters. But this came with a caveat. Students will have to pay N4000 to print their letters.

We were told at that time that it cost about N800 million to setup and service infrastructure for a full computerization of the mobilization process. The DG said then said that rather than request for money to install the infrastructure, he would prefer to canvass for increment of the current N19,800 allowance being paid to prospective Corp members. He said the new fees will service a private sector-driven build, operate and transfer agreement with collaborating firm, SIDMACH Technologies Nigeria Limited.

“Why should we pay to serve our motherland?” is the chorus on everyone’s lips. While serving corps members are clamoring for an increase in the federal allowance, those that are yet to enter into the service are being charged. With the current reduction, everyone is asking… “What’s the difference between 4,000 and 3,000?”. Well the answer is N1,000. The chorus hasn’t faded yet.
